....does anybody else out there find something strange about the "Dark Star Orchestra" phenomenon?
After hearing about them for so many years I finally went to a show. I left in the middle of the third song -- not just because of their performance (which was mediocre at best), but also due to the fact that "something" seems wrong with their explanation for doing what they do (originally they primarily duplicated the set lists of GD shows, however nowadays they may have their own "original' set lists).

First off, like I just told you in the email I sent, I'm glad to see that your spirits are apparently back up from where they had been. Your words read like those of a healthy man and that's great to see.

If there is anything especially strange about it, to me it would be that there is a phenomenon at all. Somehow or another this band has been able to eke out a genuine touring schedule and following of fans, and I will assume that the fans actually tour with the band like Grateful Dead Heads did. Honestly, that's weird to me, probably just as weird as tour Heads were to those who were not Grateful Dead fans. But we are talking about a cover band, not an ensemble performing original material (and distinct interpretations of material written by other artists) presenting a unique experience that they created themselves. Here's something I posted about a month ago with regard to the subject at hand, and I think I was being a little charitable at the beginning. But it offers one explanation of my perspective.

Bryan,Arbuthnot,rich-and-wealthy:
Thanks a lot for making the effort to respond; I've been wanting to post that inquiry ever since I uncovered this Forum.
Upon reading Bryan's link to his previous post there is one lyric that I now see in a different light: "Went to see the Captain......"

Thanks again; Boston's weather feels like San Fran this morning....gotta go find the Captain ---- AshesRising

A great cover band around these environs is "The Knot!'-- formerly known as "Slipknot!" --- no B.S. from the musicians -- for 25-plus years they just walk out on stage and play without any ridiculous crap. Highly recommend them: http://www.knotbuzz.com (adio samples available)

Their solo bands are excellent as well, especially the lead guitarist's (Bruce Mandaro) band: http://www.brucemandaro.com/ (.mp3's available to sample, including "Shady Grove")

Keyboard player's solo adventure is:

Wow this is awesome. I had no idea these guys were still around. Back in the late 80's they played quite often at Aiko's in Saratoga and they rocked!!! Gonna have to cross the border and check them out again.

Gotta respectfully disagree.

I really get a kick out of seeing DSO for many of the same reasons I loved seeing the GD. I like the anticipation of the setlist whether a recreation or an original. check out this setlist:

disc 1 1) Funiculi-Funicula 2) BIODTL 3) Cold Rain & Snow 4) Me & Bobby McGee 5) Viola Lee Blues 6) You Ain't Woman Enough 7) Smokestack Lightning > 8) Birdsong 9) Me & My Uncle > 10) China Cat Sunflower > 11) I Know You Rider disc 2 1) Playing In The Band 2) Dupree's Diamond Blues 3) Around & Around disc3 1) Dark Star > 2) St. Stephen > 3) Drums > 4) Space > 5) St. Stephen 6) Cosmic Charlie 7) Not Fade Away > 8) GDTRFB > 9) Lovelight* 10) Baby Blue

That is from the Gathering of the Vibes 2004. It was a lovely summer night and they treated the crowd to a great time.

John is a very, very good guitar player and has an ability to really catch fire and take you places. Rob Eaton does a great job of giving him a frame of reference on which to explore. The rest of the band is tight.

If you haven't seen them, give them a change. You might be surprised.

I think I know what you mean Ashes... People keep telling me I should go hear them... But I don't, not sure why, but I just don't really care to I guess.

I have no problem with people getting enthusiastic about their live shows as far as it's just a fun night out, but let's be clear about the fact that they are nothing more than a tribute band, and as such they fall directly into the same category as Hotter Than Hell (Kiss), Paradise City (Guns 'n' Roses), Sticky Fingers (the Stones), No Quarter (Zeppelin), etc. No doubt some folks may not like seeing DSO lumped into the same category as these groups, but they serve the same purpose: offering a facsimile (the quality varies) of someone else’s art to a ready made marketplace in the absence of the genuine article.

Not to mention "Cyanide"...

(reference: The Simpsons:)

(Otto's bride) "You got Poison to play at our wedding??"

(Band leader): "We're Cyanide--a loving tribute to Poison."
